In The Walled Garden, our main objective is to provide a stimulating and caring environment where people can learn horticultural skills, work skills and life skills - and have fun, too.
The benefits of work in the garden
In The Walled Garden, people can:
- Improve their social skills and learn about teamwork
- Develop essential life skills such as getting on with others, communication, literacy and numeracy in a safe environment
- Benefit from a safe and realistic workplace where there is a sense of belonging
- Increase their confidence and self esteem
- Participate at all levels in what is essentially a commerical working enterprise
- Benefit from the theraputic value of horticultural activities
- Develop skills that will be useful for possible future work placements
It's a growing business
Everyone who comes into the garden gets involved in the many different seasonal tasks required to run a nursery, such as sowing seeds, taking cuttings pricking out and potting on, and watering and feeding plants. Making up hanging baskets and terracotta pots are important jobs in the spring and autumn - several local pubs now rely on us for their seasonal displays!
Fresh free-range eggs
We have 20 egg-laying chickens who have their own run. Service users collect the eggs, replenish the chickens' food and water and regularly clean out their shed and living accommodation. Many people benefit from working with animals - and our customers are quick to buy our free-range eggs!
Open to the public from 9.30am to 4.00pm
We grow and sell plants to the public, and provide planters for local businesses. We're open for plant sales between 9.30am and 4.00pm all year round. In May and June, we're open on Saturdays, too. You'll find us on the corner of Bonnetts Lane and Ifield Avenue.

Does your garden need help?
We offer a local garden maintenance service. Working in a small team with the support of an instructor, service users work on private gardens and also help to maintain the outside spaces of some of Outreach 3 Way's own housing services. No job is too small, and we are happy to do one-off jobs and rubbish clearance too. Through this service, the people we suppport gain new gardening skills and the opportunity to use use garden machinery and equipment.

Our plans for the future...
We hope to set up a small retail outlet where people can learn and practise valuable skills such as customer care and handling money. We want to continue to promote our plant sales, eggs and our expanding gardening services.
